I am very excited about the widespread introducion of HD content. But, I have a vast DVD collection (as DVDs and backups on MPEG-4) and do not want to buy all of them again in HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, so any suggestions on how to up-convert DVDs (and MPEG-4 videos) to HD quality without the need for a hardware solution or buying all the DVDs again (ie a software solution) would be greatly appreciated.

HD-DVD and BluRay players will upconvert over HDMI much better than you can do in software. You can even buy DVD players now that will upconvert for HDTV screens. The amount of time it takes to do a good software upconversion is simply not justified when you see how much lower the quality is over the on-the-fly conversion done by a good player.

Have fun with this for 30 days. It just isn't realistic at the moment. Quality is OK, but speed (lack of) makes it impractical.

  4. i hate to say this but up-converting dvd to HD will do NOTHING for the video quality. If your original source is a dvd, you can not in anyway get TRUE HD. The best thing to do is just buy a upconverting dvd player. Trying to do a software upconvert will not enhance video quality at all.
