problems playing a .avi file?

i downloaded a few .avi files from win mx but i cant seem to play them using divx alpha 2 or windows media but i can play them in virtual dub.the only thing is i just downloaded a bit of them.do you have to complete the download in order for them to work with the mentioned. i have divx 5 codec applied do u need the earlier ones aswell?
