I'm becoming leery of Supermediastore's TYs, and I say that as one who has purchased over 1000 of them. Although they burn and play very well, with few coasters and bad discs, the quality scans are not very good - much worse than those I'm getting from Verbatim. The Taiyo-Yudens in question are TYG02, DVD-R, Premiums no less, burned at 4x speed. While Nero CD/DVD quality scans are not the only factor in judging the quality of a disc, I have become sufficiently concerned that I will not be purchasing from SMS again, and will stick with Verbatims for now and Rima.com in the future.

  2. It seems as if the mystery has been solved - I came home from work today, and my brand new stack of TY's from RIMA were waiting on me......along with the news from my wife that my SONY no longer worked.

Guess I'll be picking up a new DVD Player real soon.

Thanks for everyone who tried to help me with this problem - everyone's input was greatly appreciated.

So I geuss this means the disks probably were fine that were giving you problems and it was a dying burner instead of TY disks right.

Should clarify that soon as you know for sure.
If you have some of the old stack of TY left and have a new stack, maybe burn one of each on the new burner and compare those, see if the same results or not.

If your old burner seems to have bit the dust, maybe try cleaning the drive if you haven't already. If it's bad and you plan to toss it you can't hurt anything anyway right.

There is nothing about faked TY media in that thread. Read it carefully. The original poster gives TY stamper codes for Pete's sake.

    I shall clarify.

There was nothing substantial about fake TY discs in that thread.

And the other thread refers to "house brand" with a faked TY code, not faked TY discs marketed as TY.

Get over the fake TY and bad disc crap. It's your hardware and most likely your firmware. ALWAYS. PERIOD.

I'm surprised that no one in the US imports the TY's sold in Japan under their own brand label of 'Thats'. Its a sure way of knowing that you have genuine TY's for those in doubt. Japanese labelling, very distinctive and colourful packaging, can't go wrong. I get them from an importer in Greece whenever some goes over there. If Greek importers can get them, how comes US importers don't ?

It would probably be too cost-prohibitive. There really is no issue in getting genuine TY in the US though, people are blowing things WAY out of proportion.

So it could be the discs have "issues".

However I do see that you are burning with NERO and some versions of NERO do poorly at burning DVD Video discs. It is unfortunately next to impossible to keep track of this as it seems the ability of NERO to burn DVD Videos correctly changes from one "update" to the next.

As a result many have given up using NERO for DVD Video burning.

The favorite tool for that is ImgBurn ... a simple freeware program (that started out as DVD Decrypter) that is known to be one of the best if not the best program for DVD Video burning.

So try ImgBurn and if that doesn't solve your issues then ... send them back for a refund or another batch etc.

    Some other things to consider:

1.) Make sure you have the most up-to-date version of the firmware for your DVD burner. Sometimes "hacked" firmwares are better than "official" firmwares.

2.) Try burning 8x media at 4x speed and try burning 16x media at 6x speed.

Good Luck and remember to keep us updated on the results of following this advise.

I never could understand the issue with Nero in regards to burning DVD video. I have been using Nero to burn DVD video for the past 3 1/2 years and have never had an issue. Am I missing something here?
