I have a bunch of VHS tapes some commercial, some recorded by my VCR that I'd like to convert to DVD. I bought a Canopus ADVC-100 to do the capturing. But once I capture them to DV with the ADVC-100, what's the best encoder to turn the DV files to MPEG-2? I've been doing a lot of reading and the 3 encoders mentioned in the title of this post seem to be the most popular choices. Any reason to choose one over the other? I'll been running the encoder on either a 2.6 ghz P4 or a Athlon 64 3400 machine both with 1 gig of memory under XP Home SP2.

If I were you I would download the trial versions and decide with your own eyes.

Procoder Express is being discontinued. I never cared for TMPGEnc Xpress myself. Just try and see if you like it. I would go with Cinema Craft Encoder. It does a pretty good job.

Thanks for the answers, everyone. I'm new to video and DVD making so I have lot of questions. I'm aware of demo versions of TMPGenc XPress and Cinema Craft Basic but I havent seen a trial version of Procoder Express. Is one available? And does anyone know why Procoder Express is being discontinued? If is still a good program is it worth buying anyway? As for filtering and cleaning up the video I dont know how to go about that as I'm a noob.

Procoder use to be a great alternative for interlace NTSC sources. CCE is the overall best solution. Mainconcept Encoder is a great alternative too: It softs a bit the picture, but on some older VHS tapes this ain't always a bad thing.
I use TMPGenc plus 2.5 for the last years and it's a great alternative for my needs. I don't like any later versions. -

Regarding the speed, well: I have an athlon XP @ 2600, so I don't have any speed benefits by using TMPGenc Express! -
