I am concerned about my movies being stretched by DLP. People's faces seem to be a little elongated and a circle appears to be slightly oval....Here is what I have done: my movies were authored in Sony Vegas and exported as 720 x 480 MPG-2 files. I remember being surprised that in order to bring in photoshop menus into DLP I had to save in 720 x 540. Does this mean that I need to also export my movies at 720 x 540???

  2. 720x540 would be an illegal frame size for DVD. You are restricted to 720x480, 704x480, 352x480, or 352x240.

What was your source? You probably resized incorrectly when creating the MPEG files in the first place.

Stretched in what direction? Most TV sets, DVD players and cable boxes have mode controls for 4:3 material. It either gets displayed with side bars or stretched horizontally to fill the 16:9 screen.

  4. Silly question maybe? What Aspect ratio is the player set to? 4:3 or 16:9, How is it connected?

For example I record on a Pioneer DVD recorder set to 19:9 from a HD DVR via S-Video. I really need to get a recorder that has Component inputs, but that is another story. If I don't hit fill on the TV's remote I get what you are describing. Hitting fill it stretched to fill the screen side to side and circles look circular. OTOH a Phillips DVD/Divx player set to 16:9 playing Divx hitting Fill does leave pilarboxes on the sides but restores proper AR. Just as an addendum if I play a DVD recorded using the recorder set to 16:9 on a 4:3 SD TV they look elongated.

So I'm suggesting look at the TV and see if it has a similar function. BTW fill on my TV stretches side to side only or zooms depending on the source and in general seems to work for my needs.

One other thing to check what were the encoder settings set to 16:9 or 4:3?

DLP's native size for menus is 720 x 540. You should design them based on the target size (720 x 480 or 720 x 576), then resize to 720 x 540 for importing.
