I just bought one of the new DVD camcorders that burn onto 8cm DVD disks, the SONY DCR - DVD505 Handy Cam.

It has two modes for making a video using a DVD - RW. The modes are "VR' and "VIDEO". I want to use the "VR" mode because it allows me to edit or delete the recorded images. (The other mode "VIDEO" does not allow me to edit the recorded images. "VIDEO" mode only allows me to delete the last image recorded.)

My question regards playback. The SONY DCR - DVD505 Handy Cam[/b].manual on page 18 says that .......the recorded DVD can be played back on in a device compatable with the DVD - "VR" mode"......

I dont know what this means in plain English. Can the DVD - RW disk recorded in "VR" mode disk be played back on any standard DVD player? Or can I somehow convert the DVD - RW in "VR" mode to a standard Video DVD for playback? I want to make home movies and give them out to other family members so they can - simply, without complications - play them on their home DVD players.

I have two new Sony DVD players / burners. The DRX - 720UL and the DRU - 810A. I read over the Operating manuals in detail. Neither mentions playing back DVDs the were recorded in the DVD - "VR" mode"......

    Thanks for reading this

The DVDs recorded in VR mode will only play in DVD players that can handle the VR mode discs. So, no, this would not be the format that you want to choose if you want to send these discs out to a bunch of people.

However, a good option would be to use whatever mode you want, and then copy your recorded clips to your computer and edit them there, then author your own DVDs. The menus will look much better, and editing on the PC will be way better than what the cam can do.

You should get the editing and authoring advice here, and go over to www.camcorderinfo.com for more advice on the camera.
