I have started making documentaries using a HD camera, as the people I am working with are also going to try and sell the project idea to TV, and my knowledge of the system dictated this was the way to go. Thing is, I want to also be able to convert the HD stream into something suitable for editing in SD (ie 720x576) in order to distribute to potential audiences and others who lack the equipment to watch the original HD content. How much processing power do I need? What kind of programs/equipment do I need? What haven't I thought of?
