My sister is looking to replace a VCR with a DVD Recorder(preferably w/ HDD) and has given me a couple of models to look over.

    Daytek - DVR 950S
    LG - LRH 780
    Pioneer - DVR 543HS
    Pioneer DVR 640H-S
    Toshiba - RD XS35

I assume she noticed these models based on price, features and availability here in Toronto.

I really know nothing of DVD Recorders so I was hoping to get some help here. All input and info is much appreciated. Feel free to recommend other models comparable to these mentioned.

The only one of those I know about is the Pioneer DVR 640H-S which is excellent. Its downside is that it doesn't have a Firewire link for connecting a DV camcorder (it would have to done using S-video instead). It also has some interesting features for storing music from CDs and MP3s and storing photos to its hard drive.

Thanks for the input. I guess the main use will be for recording TV shows to watch and likely erase. Not really for any archiving purposes or VHS transfers.

  4. For that purpose, they can all do an adequate job. You may want to go with what your sister finds easier to use. The people interface on all these units is a bit different.

One other unit might be the Polaroid 2001G available at Walmarts in the US for $219. I am a bit hesitant to recommend it because some earlier units like the one I tested had a remote control that was weak requiring aiming directly at the sensor. It does have an 80 GB hard drive and the recording quality is good.
