    Hello everybody,

I would appreciate your advice on the following.

I am new at all the video stuff and trying to determine what is what and why. I am trying to determine the most effective way to convert avi to DVD.

It have an impression most experienced people use CCE or TMPGenc for the purpose though, based on various guides, the conversion process is multi step, takes a few tools and extensive knowledge.

But there is also such a tool as Procoder around that is, in my opinion, easier to use. It is pretty close to something that can be called “one-click” solution. Not so many guides for Procoder and it looks like it is way less popular.

Based on what I read on various forums, the final picture from Procoder and CCE does not differ much if at all. Some people even say, “PCis better hands down”.

My question is: if the final picture from Procoder is as good as from CCE or TMPGenc, why people do it through a more complicated process that involves a few tools? If it is a hobby and intention to understand “what is under the hood”, it is fine. I like that too, to a certain extent.

But if we are talking about the most effective way to achieve the highest picture quality? Am I missing something?

    Thank you for your patience!

Canopus Procoder is expensive ... at least the full blown version.

There is a cheaper version (Procoder Express I think it is called) but that version does not give a level of control that is often needed. It is a bit too "dumbed-down". Specifically people have issues with the Express version when it comes to the handling of colorspace i.e., IRE levels.

TMPGEnc Plus gives a lot of control and is inexpensive but it also has colorspace issues since it works in the RGB colorspace.

For the budget minded person CCE Basic is the way to go but it is far from the easy route for you really need to learn to use AviSynth to get the most out of using CCE and some people are intimidated by AviSynth.

    John "FulciLives" Coleman,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

Do I understand you right: if we put aside the costs issue, Procoder can produce the same picture qualty as other big players like CCE and TMPGenc.

    Thank you!

Well ... it's not that easy LOL

This is one of those touchy subjects. Threads like this tend to end in flame wars. I like CCE. No I like TMPGEnc Plus. No you are both crazy I like Procoder. Yeah well your mother ... and so on.

Everyone has a favorite and everyone thinks their encoder looks "best".

Of course I think CCE is best if for nothing else than the colorspace issue you do NOT have with CCE but have with TMPGEnc Plus and Procoder Express.

Also it seems as though AviSynth and CCE go together as well as Peanut Butter and Chocoloate. It's just a great powerfull combination.

    Thank you!

The last thing I would like to initiate is flame wars. I am just trying to understand. No offence to anybody.
