how to convert subtitles from a MOV file to a text file to edit them.

Hi,

i have a bunch of video files (mov) which have subtitles in french.
what i want to do is to take these subtitles to edit them (translate them) and then
put them back to the video.

i am new to video editing so i dont know what steps to follow or what programs do i
need to use.

i have Quicktime pro .

so far i tried to export the subtitle file which i found in Quicktime as a separate file but
when i try to export it have no option to export it as a text file.

what should i do ?

I'm not familiar with mov subtitles, but chances are it's not in text format.
What format(s) can you export them as?

Subtitles in DVDs are bitmaps, I believe. Don't know if that's the same format you have. There are some tools that can scan and OCR them back to text. Have a look at the subtitle tools linked here: https://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=24#24

However, you might find subtitles for your video (if it's a movie or a popular TV show) at one of these sites:

But you need to check them, some are full of typos.

i have tried some of the tools but i dont seem to get anywhere. i cannot find subtitles because these are custom made videos.

Quicktime gives the ability to export 3g, avi, bmp, dv stream, FLC, hinted movie, image sequence, ipod, mpeg-4, picture, quicktime media link, quicktime movie, AIFF, AU, wave.

Your HTML is written badly on that page (possibly others) as the links within the page ALSO refer to internal links (aka Not Accessible from the Internet).
If you've been testing these from a local site, you should think about having another site cross-check the files, as they're invalid as-is.

Quicktime allows for "Video" tracks, Multiplexed "MPEG" tracks and "Text" tracks (among others).

If your video is a Multiplexed MPEG track, it could be that the subtitling is muxed along with the MPEG video stream, or could be that it is encoded within the UserData portion of the video stream.

If your subtitling is a Text track (or HTML track), it should be possible to export the text (assuming you have QTPro). Since that doesn't seem to be an option for you, I'm guessing it's not a text track. Since you're gonna be using QTPro anyway, use [Ctrl + I] to open the Movie Info panel and see if it lists a Text track...

If your subtitling is part of the Video track, you're stuck and will need to export to a video format and codec that can be accepted by one of the subtitling tools that do OCR. Because that is what you'll have to do next with it...
