I have some avi's that are around 50mb is it possible to make them much smaller, if quality in sound and picture is lost then that's fine.

Reduce the resolution and the bitrate, reduce audio bitrate or channels - all this will help.

What are the details of the source (resolution, run time etc), and will your target have the required codecs, or does it need to be kept simple ?

Convert to avi xvid or divx with for example AutoGk or Dr. DivX. Set the output size and convert. It requires that you have the divx codec or xvid codec installed.

Or convert to WMV with Windows Movie Maker or Windows Movie Maker.
