I am learning to use Adobe Encore and when I try and import an AVI file (encoded with DiVX and resolution of 640 x 480) it tell me I need a video file with 720 x 480, 720 x 486, or 704 x 480. Can I reencode this downloaded AVI file to the resolution that Encore wants? Or should I use another authoring program? I use TMPGEnc Author for very basic menus but like what Encore lets me create. Thanks for any help.

You cannot author Divx files with re-encoding them anyway. Encore has a transcoder, but I don't know how flexible it is. If it is just an mpeg transcoder then you need to have the correct format for your source material to begin with. If it can convert other formats, then you need to read your manual to work out how. If you look at What is DVD (top left corner of this page) you will see the compliant resolutions for DVD.

My preference is always to prepare assets before authoring, which means encoding them as compliant in a seperate encoder. There are many that can do this, as well as other tools to help you resize and filter your source along the way. Virtualdub and avisynth are indispensible in this respect. Simplest solution would be to use either tmpgenc plus to encode, or if you just want it done without worrying about all the complex settings, use ConvertXtoDVD to do the encoding, then use the material it has created in another authoring program. This may mean demuxing the assets from ConvertXtoDVD first so Encore can read them.

    Use Virtualdub's re-size filter.
He's a liar and a murderer, and I say that with all due respect.
