Has anyone used http://www.dvdisaster.com ? I just found out about it. It is a utility that uses Reed Solomon parity similar to PAR2 files. It can scan a CD/DVD for bad sectors and also try to recover data. You can also create ECC recovery data for the CD/DVD. It has a nice graph that shows the sector layout on the disc. I've been just creating RAR files and then using QuickPAR for recovery. But this program may help someone read a bad disc.

Unfortunatelly ... it dose not actually work ... if the file is corrupted or the media is damaged ... no tool on the the face of this planet can recover it .
This tool dose one unique thing , by creating this backup par file , it is possible to recover a file ... however , as stated by the program , this dose require more space on the media to store this file ... it may be possible to store this par file on another cd as a backup .
If it's worthy of keeping ... make one for general use ... and another as a backup .
Place the backup in a plastic case .. and place this in a cupboard , and close the door ... the only time you touch this disc is if the first fail's .

Having tried it ... newbies may find it confusing to work out what is the best method ... so in this case ... MAKE 2 COPIES . -
This is more than just PAR2 files. It is reading the disc on a low-level hardware scale, not the filessytem like Windows does. It can reconstruct any file using some ECC blocks.

It is similar to many error correction approaches used in telecommunication. It required the check file to be intact. Beware of the overhead of 15% for the check file.
