sorry, not a video question but i dont tend to use many other forums,
my PB has 5 Partitions split equally over 100GB disk space

    1.osx/apps
    2.mp2v's & authored DVD's
    3.DV Pal
    4.Media(itunes/iphoto libraries)
    5.Divx/Avi movies

I also have ext 80GB drive

my osx/apps partition is running out of room for new apps i wish to install
i want to create a larger partition for osx/apps and move all data currently there onto the larger partition, and reduce either partition 2,3 or 5 accordingly.

what is the best way of doimg this?

    thanks in advance

What I would do in your situation Stretch,
is to first use Disc Utility to partion the 80GB ext HD
    to 3 partitions:

    1. Called OSX_HD (about 30GB)
    2. One Called Media (22GB)
    3. One called Movies_DIVX(22GB)

Since most 80GB HDS under HFS+ are actually 74.xxGB,
that's how I came up with the figures.

Next I would use Disc Utility to fix permissions on my main PB
HD partition, where the apps are stored.

Then, close Disc Utility and launch Carbon Copy Cloner.

    Using CCC, I would :

    1. Clone the PB main HD to the OSX_HD
    2. Clone the Media to the new Media partition on the ext hd
    3. Copy the DIVX/AVI movies, as well as the DV Pal and Mp2vs
to the Media_Divx partition. Anything that doesn't fit, archive to DVD, or copy over to the Media Partition.

Once these are all done, I would then boot off a Tiger ( or Panther) Boot Disc, and run Disc Utility again, wiping out the
PB's Partitions completely using the Erase command.
    Then re-partition into two partitions:

    OSX_Boot ( 46GB)
    Projects (50GB)

    again, HFS+ limitations...

then, reboot using the FW drive as the Boot HD,
and then re-clone using CCC back to the OSX_Boot
as Target (OSX_HD as your Master) and put all my
    system and apps back.

When that's done, copy back to Projects:

the former contents of DV Pal, and mp2vs,

and then reboot to the OS CD one more time,
and do a repair permisssions on the newly created
    PB Boot HD.

    Now you have:

*All your media portably stored on the ext HD, in case you
need to move to another Mac.

*A working bootable Clone in case of problems due to system patches, bad software installs, etc.

*A larger VM partition for your OS to play in
    (which it will thank you)

After that, you just need to re-point your iTunes and iPhoto
to the new places the media is stored under their Preferences
panels, so that they can access the media, and your all set.

Partitioning is unnecessary. All you're doing is making your life more complicated. Buy a few FireWire drives instead.

I guess I'm not sure what you expect to gain from the partitioning.

While it's not truly necessary under OSX,
it does make for the mindset of organization.
