    Hi all,

Pls, I'll like to know how to connect my SONY TRV480 camcoder as pass thru to capture analogue video from VCR to my PC. Anytime I attempted this, I'm only able to capture the audio but nothing shows on the camera LCD. Ironically, it was clearly stated in the cam manual that it's quite possible but i've made several attempts & could not still work out. This my inabailty has made me to buy an ext. TV card (Cute TV USB) which could not even give me a great video quality production I desire.

I do connect the cam to VCR thru the 3-head RCA cable supplied & the Cam to PC thru firewire(aka 1394). The camcoder is fully recognised by the PC & my editing softwares.

If it has to do with settings, I have tried all these: On the camcoder
P-Menu>Menu>Standard set>a/v-dv out (set to ‘ON’)
    P-Menu>Display>LCD Panel (set to ‘ON’)
P-Menu>Menu>USB-PLY/EDT> USB Stream or STD-USB or Pictbridge (I do select USB stream)

Or does it have to do with: i-link / IR setting in Prog Edit

Or does this have to do with TV colur sys or VCR setting: Auto/PAL/SECAM/N443? I have experimented all.

I still wonder what type of analog movie conversion SONY refers?

Pls, what else do I need to know on the connection/setting

PLS, I'LL APPRECIATE A CLUE TO SOLVING THIS PROBLEM.

    Rgds,

  2. on canon you just select in menu dv on.

i'm not that familiar with sony passthru, but I think your 3rd option, should be picbridge, you don;t use any usb.
and on software, you have to select de capture option, not play or edit

    Hi,

The option (Pictbridge) is basically for memory card or ext. printer. It doesn't have to do with this. However, I've tried the option of Play/edit format & also rec. mode.

It will be of note to inform you that when I attempt playing back any edited video to my camcoder fron PC using editing software (Video Studio, & others) andbeing connected by 1394 cable, IT PLAYS BACK FINE ON THE LCD:both audio & video.

Pls, I'm still on stand by for you guys response. I NEED THIS PASS THRU BADLY.

i'd try - take out the cam tape. hook analog source to video in/out. put cam in play/edit mode. turn on source, push play on cam. check what's on lcd screen. if you have audio and video. push stop on cam. plug in ieee1394 cable to cam and computer. start windv or whatever you wish to capture with. if it recognizes cam, set software options, click start recording, record for a minute. click stop, close software. play dv file on computer to see what you've got.

If I'm not mistaken passthru is not allowed(at least in Europe?)...my manual says the passthru option is valid on my Canon....but actually it is NOT.

Forget the PC and FireWire 1st; remove them. Your objective now is just to connect the VCR output to the camcorder inputs; when a valid video is playing, in VCR (PLAY) mode, the video should ALWAYS appear on the camcorder LCD. VALID video means a few things: your 480 should BE the same system as the VCR AND the tape you are attempting to play. ALL should BE true-blue PAL or NTSC. A multisystem VCR may have been set to output a hybrid video system, such as NTSC 4.43 or PAL 60 or NTSC 50, which ARE NOT valid systems as far as your 480 goes. The VCR should be in top running order, with accurate timebase generation. Digital camcorders ARE VERY critical of this, and old, cheap VCRs may still produce watchable video but a camcorder may mute it when connected. Of course, the VHS tape you are trying to capture should still generate a good video signal, which includes good sync. Wretched VHS tapes with plenty of dropouts will cause the camcorder to mute the video input sporadically or all the time. It's safe to say most ordinary old mono VHS VCRs DO NOT cut it as capture sources. Really dedicated types with a mountain of VHS tapes to digitize will get an industrial or professional S-VHS deck with all the bells & whistles (TBC being one of the most important). A VERY good way to test if your camcorder will pass-thru or capture is to connect it to a digital satellite receiver video output; the video sync of this is rock-stable and SHOULD always produce a picture on the LCD.
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".
