  1. Hi all. I'm looking for a program that can allow me to do all sorts of whacky video effects to my videos. Conventionally I've used Corel Photopaint to do them but it means converting mpegs to avi and it gets really tedious doing frame by frame and for some reason all those plugins I've downloaded from various sites don't seem to work.

So I'm basically after a video editing program that will allow me to do effects such as chromakey, electronic painting, visual feedback etc... I know Ulead Video Studio and MPEG Video Wizard has some effects in there but that's not enough, I want to be able do the video effects used back in the 70s, here's a couple of links to a couple of early 70s rock clips from a German pop show "Beat Club" which used AWSOME video effects:

Is there any MPEG video editing program that can do all of that?

    Cheers

I used to produce a Public Access TV show, featuring local bands that had a lot of those kinds of effects. Most of that kind of stuff was done using analog keyers and video feedback. It's done on the fly, right in the switcher. IIRC a lot of those effects can be had using the Video Toaster or similar hardware, but a good old school analog video production switcher is what they used.

If you're in MPEG format, MVW has a few cool effects you can apply to your clip, such as "solarize" & "colour replace", among others. Not quite the retro "feedback" effect you're talking about, tho'...

Or, buy the "ACE Converter/Enhancer" and go to town ha ha! I just mixed (up) some band stuff for a friend - he was stoked! I just fed the camcorder's S-video through the ACE into my Pioneer DVD recorder, and we went to town with the ACE's knobs! He was pleasantly surprised to say the least...! Now we split the songs up on the computer & apply groovey transitions, courtesy Womble! Looks great!

Can't do that "feedback" / Cliff Richard "Devil Woman" effect, tho' ... unfortunately! I think I would need the camcorder pointing at my TV set while it's playing the footage...?? Or something like that?

i really hate most of those effects as being cheesy - but as mentioned, video toaster does em all .... Vegas also has most of these or at least you can combine filters to do the same (make your own masks , etc ....) ..

don't bother to edit mpeg to do effects - as it has to be converted anyway and it is not a great editing source ... much better idea to convert to avi (like DV) first ....

Doesn't avi have to be re-encoded (ie "rendered") too?

    Naw... Cheesey FX are COOL!

For us "MPEG Low Lifes", sometimes "CHEESEY" is the only way to go! Whoa!

The problem with mpeg source is it often re-encodes poorly. Much more so that some other options. If you have the DV source you are better off using it in place of the mpeg. Of course, if the mpeg is all you have, be aware that using less than optimal bitrates will show up problems very quickly.

Yeah, the best results are still had using a switcher and analog keyers. To me, nothing compares to the physical control surface of a switcher. Some of the Panasonic WJ MX series stuff is relatively low cost, used. Its kinda like a dj and turntables...

  9. Hi guys. Thanks for trying to help. I've got MPEG Video Wizard, I can make quite a few FX and FX combos in it, problem though is when saving the MPEG it takes ages to do.

I guess I'll have to stick with Corel Photopaint and edit AVIs. I can do practically almost any of the FX you see on TV including chromakey using various filters for the psychedelia FX and colour mask for chromakeying, there's also a visual feedback effect filter as well. Just that dealing with AVIs, they obviously use too much memory and take a while to load in Corel and the big worry is when plucking clips out of a show and converting to AVI for FX and converting back and restitching them to the show there's a chance of AV sync problems, I've had problems like this in the past.

Oh well guess there's no easy way around this.

    Cheers

Wax2 can add many effect's ... and I think there is frameserver support for ulead videostudio ... 8 .

Deal with avi in wax2 only (no mpeg support) ... not directly anyway .
Final output as mpeg or for dvd from nle editor .

    ----------------------

Install wax2 ... add the extra package as well ... finally install the frameserver (only for nle editor's) ... vegas , ulead video studio ...
