I just shot a school concert and it turned out pretty good. All edited in Premiere pro 2, DVD authored in Encore 2 output to Taiyo Yuden 16X rated discs burned at 8X.

Problem I am having is about 25% of the people say the DVD's skip in their players

I tested 50% of them in three different players and they all played without a problem. The DVD's that skip on these other players work fine on my players and most others.

Any idea what could be causing this?

Were they +r or - r dvd's. There are some dvd players that only like +r, and some that only like -r. Generally -r should be good for most folks. You might try taking a couple of +r dvd's and bitsetting them to -rom and see if those same people have the same problem.

Also, what was the bitrate that you used when you authored your video. It could also be that you had right on the edge of too much compression when you encoded it.

I used DV High Quality 4MB VBR 2 pass

    Audio was 192kbps 48khz

    These were all -R discs.

  4. Try some Taiyo Yuden DVD+R's (YUDEN000T02/03) setting booktype to DVD-ROM.
Use UDF 1.02 by making an ISO image file with IMGTools classic and burn with IMGBurn.

See if that does the trick.

I cannot seem to find where you change the UDF setting....can you help?

Also...Do Sony drives not support changing the booktype? They are not listed in the settings tabs when I choose to change booktype.

I have never had problems with write speeds of 4X or lower (any media brand). I get a few customer returns (10%-20%) when burning projects at 8X & 16X.

1.IMGTool Classic outputs to UDF 1.02 by default because its most compatible with DVD Players,so you dont need to change anything.

2.Dont know if your particular Sony drive supports this (Most Sony drives are rebadged LiteOns AFAIK,if this is the case, you CAN change booktype) but I reckon it does.IMGBurn dont support changing booktype/bitsetting for Sony.
All you need to do before burning is to use Nero CD-DVD Speed and click on Extra>Bitsetting and change the new setting to DVD-ROM,then click "Set" and thats it.

    Note:

Some drives return to DVD+R by default after rebooting your PC,so you might need to use CD-DVD Speed again for changing bitsetting before burning. My LG Writer does this but you soon get used to it.If booktype still shows as DVD-ROM after rebooting, you wont need to worry about changing the booktype everytime you want to burn a DVD+R with ImgBurn!

You do realise that burning at speeds too slow on some 16x rated media can give more PIE and PIF (Worse Quality Disc) than if you were to burn at half their certified speed eg 8x,thus the playability of the disc is WORSE.

I would assume the lower the MB's the more compression depending on the video's length ect...

In your case, the higher the bit rate, the better the quality. You should use the best quality you can and be able to fit the video on the disc.

I saw a post the other day where someone using an older DVD burner, that was not up the the faster speeds, was having problems using the faster medium Even though he was burning at a slower speed he still had problems. If you have a slower DVD burner, you might look for media rated for 2.4x and try some of those.
