Any first hand experiance on the new Canopus editing tool ?
I would love to hear some imput on it and how does it rate now?
Did they get it right? Does it compare to Vegas and PPro2 ?
Does it make sanse to buy without the editing card first and add it later?

adobe and sony far outsell Edius , and after some bad times with some of the canopus products as well non support for some of their hardware -- they lost a lot of loyal customers ...

they still make very good products though ////

i think there is a review at creativecow and/or DMN

As far as the software goes, i can't comment on the Edius..But i believe that the selling point is their hardware. They bundle it up with proprietary codecs, so that it renders relatively fast with their system..I'm not in broadcast, so many of the options are redundant to me..

Matrox and Pinnacle do the same, but at least with Matrox and Pinnacle cards, the Adobe products tag along for the ride..You can gain some interesting skills along the way, so, if you potentially cross hardware platforms, at least it'll be somewhat universal..

I don't know if Sony has any supported hardware cards??

    BJ_M?

If you're primarily working with DV, then i'd personally invest time and money in a fast system, without the editing card, and learn either Vegas or Premiere..
From their, once your skills are honed, a hardware card will be like icing on the cake..

    My 2 cents worth.

It all depends on what kind of editing you want to do.

Edius4 + Canopus hardware (same with Matrox or Liquid) are for making budget commercials for cable (or local broadcast), templated wedding videos, zoomy promos (maybe informercials?) and other one man band effects intensive tasks.

The hardware is all about speeding effects editing not encoding. None of these products have a wide following, you would be joining an international club of user groupies that meet at major trade shows (like NAB or IBC) and trade notes, complain to the software writers and then break to drink together (often with the manufacturer picking up the tab when the natives are restless).

If you are serious about these products, first find the forums where they all chat, introduce yourself and ask if you should buy this product or X, Y or Z. They usually are very honest and will tell you to buy something else if it better meets your needs.

You are interviewing them because they, not Canopus, will be your main source of support and if you don't piss them off, they will drop everything to help you out of a jam. They will also make great drinking buddies if you visit their country or meet at a show. Welcome to the upper end broadcast business.

If you go with a larger market share product like Premiere, Avid or FCP, you will need to fit into their culture. Premiere is supported like other corporate focused products, Avid is a somewhat snooty bunch (country club?) and we all know what the Apple culture is.

Vegas falls in the middle. It was a small company (Sonic Foundry) that sold a division to Sony, but still is run by the same small group in Madison. They have a core group of long time users that behaves much like a Canopus user group but Sony also layers on a corporate support group similar to Adobe.

So, you thought this was a features choice? It is all culture if you want to get serious.

no as far as hardware rendering - but they do support the full line of blackmagic cards natively/// pus vegas supports network rendering anyway .....
