Just wondering if there will ever be a dual-layer re-writable dvd format. Anybody?

Thats good. I hope they come out soon. These would be good for a few reasons. If you are trying to burn and want to avoid coasters, you can always erase and try again. Also, if you back something up and then sell the original, you could always keep the RW and erase them and use them for something else.

RW discs can be used for something that is probably technically not allowed. If you rent a dvd or borrowed a dvd from the library to watch with the family, but have to return them before you have a chance to watch them, you could temporarily back-up the dvd to RW and then watch it. You then erase the RW disc and save it for another extended rental late return emergency. No pirating/copying, its just an "extended rental/borrow" disc. It would beat late fees or library fines.

Anyhow, +RW DL discs should be handy. Of course, HD and blue-ray format are coming out, so I suppose there won't be many more things to release for regular dvd format any time soon. Of course, further reading has indicated that +RW DL (and probably -RW DL) discs will not necessarily be compatible with regular dvd players.

Maybe. They've had it in R&D for a long time now, couple years at least. So far, nothing is out.

Philips has gone over +RW dl and completed the specification 1.0 to JVCs DVD-RW dl now with a two-ply DVD, too. The disc stores 8.5 GByte and shall be available with 2.4x speed so that the burn of a complete DVD takes about 45 minutes. The data is saved on two phase CHANGE layers of which the first one is deposited with a semitransparenten reflecting layer while the second is reacting to the remaining laser light. These rewritables have worse visual features than that of a DVD ROM or a DVD +R dl though. Not everyones present DVD player will recognize these discs however.

    VERY loosely translated...

Since +RW DL will be completely out of dvd-video compatibility, why bother with it?
Unless you want to store data on it - but then get a HD-DVD or BR-DVD instead...

I am pretty sure that option will cost at least a couple more dollars. Besides, movies don't have to be in spec to be seen on a computer.

Why bother? HD-DVD? How many people own an HD-DVD? Very few people really care about dvd-video compatibility. Most people use dvd media to store data. The niche byproduct of dvd burnable media is video storage.

    so?
First dvd-ram writer cost me more than that, my first dvd-r writer about the same, and iirc the first blanks were $20/ea as well, so whats your point?
Obviously technological novelties are not for poor.

Lets hope youre right about the booktype settings (which I doubt since +R DL are already barely comptaible with very few standalones, regardless of booktype settings)

...that was just an idea. Anybody with an HTPC can avoid the burn and accomplish the same thing.

The price of BD and HD media probably will not come down for a good many years - look how long it took for DVD-5 and then DL to become even semi-affordable. Hi-capacity media tends to stay high-priced until a bigger, popular standard comes along. Then, the pressure's on. That's just economics.

At least +RW DL's problems might be solvable by firmware upgrades or new versions of already-cheap DVD players. Don't even bother thinking about BD or HD unless you've got a lot of money to burn and are willing to be a guinea pig.
