Am I to understand you want to re-encode something to xvid and store it on a DVD? For example, to play back on a PC or Divx-compatible DVD player?

If you want to convert DVD to xvid/Divx, use SimpleDivX and set your bitrate to around 2100 if you want about DVD quality. There are some other good tools out there. Probably some folks will suggest Tmpgenc Express, but I'm not fond of software that you have to pay for and still phones home. AutoGK also does DVD->xvid/divx, and is a little more flexible about input. VirtualDub is a good, free all-in-one. I think the latest version supports batch processing (like SimpleDivx). I'm sure other folks will reply with their favorite tools too, and they're probably just as good as any of these.

Your request only makes sense if your DVD Player can play DIVX/XVID files. Please clarify.

XviD and DivX are two completely different implimentations of the same standard. So they are different, but they are also in some ways the same. Like say LAME vs. another mp3 encoder, like iTunes for example. They are both mp3 encoders, but they are not the same.
