I have read a good deal concerning captions. I can't get rid of them. I rip with DVD Decrypter 3.4 and select all files. Re-author with DVD Shrink 3.2. I remove the warnings (fbi, attention...) in shrink and then burn. When played on computer, no captions. Put the DVD in a player and get captions with no way to get them off the screen.

    Help.

Caption ? Do you mean subtitles ?

Check your DVD players settings. Chnaces are you have selected a default language for subtitles and the players is forcing them on. In DVD Decrypter, check your preferences to make sure you disable all PUO (Prohibitied User Operations), as these can block you from changing subs or audio on the fly. Finally, if you don't need subtitles at all, you can deselect them in DVD Shrink before burning, and you will never see them again.

Yes, I mean subtitles. I will try the DVD Decrypter suggestion.

I would also check your player settings. Even if you remove the PUOs with decrypter, the movie will always start with the subs on if your player forces them to.

I had that problem when backing up Dodgeball.

When I'd go to the menu and select "none" for subtitles, they still wouldn't go away when returning to the movie.

However, they would go away if I pressed the "subtitle" button on the remote. Try that if you haven't already.

As far as removing them from the disc, can't you just uncheck all the "subpicture" boxes in DVD Shrink before compression?

To try to clear up any confusion on this matter, it can generally be stated that:

CC -closed Caption displays in a black box and is controlled by the TV set. On lots of tvs this activity is controlled by the tv set up program.

Sub titles are displayed without the black box. (the black box is transparent)
These can be eliminated by transcoding and muxing programs. Controllig them is done at the DVD player.

Thanks very much to everyone for your advice. I was able to eliminate the sub titles with DVD Shrink by checking 'dsable all sub pictures'' box. My problem stemmed from my process of dvd backup.

I never liked seeing all those warnings and the menus. (Guess I'm just different.) I just wanted to put the dvd in the player and watch a movie. So I use re-author in DVD Shrink and just drag over the movie. That is how I got into trouble with the sub titles. It seemed that when I eliminated the fbi.. I got slapped with the sub titles. I have tried VobBlanker but I have yet to get it to do what what I need. I have read all the guides. I just gave up on it.

BTW, my dvd player does not have a provision to turn the sub titles off - at least I can't find it. I have tried

Cal_tony - Thanks for the CC and Sub title clarification. I have not seen anyone else make it that clear.

  8. When you start a dvd, you can check the dvd menu to display no subs.

Handguy, that is good for some but I don't copy any menus at all from the dvd, just the movie. When I inser the dvd, the movie begins.

    Anyway, my problem is solved!
