Hi, I'm pretty new to this dvd burning game. Someone here suggested convertxtodvd to me (if you can find my other post in this forum you can see my original problem), now however, whenever I convert a avi with convertxtodvd and then burn it with either convertxtodvd or Nero when I try to play it in my dvd player it says it can't play the dvd. What can I do?

What brand/model is your DVD player ?

Does it play multi-format discs (e.g. can it play PAL discs, or only NTSC) ?

Is the disc you created PAL or NTSC ?

    Is your disc +R or -R ?

Can your player play that format of disc ?

What, if any, error message do you get ?

    Ok, DVD player is a Panasonic DVD/Video CD/CD Player Model - DVD-RV26

I'm not sure if it plays both PAL and NTSC. Before I went out to buy discs I called Panasonic and they said it would play -R's so that's what I bought. I didn't know about the PAL/NTSC thing at that point so I didn't ask, I suppose I should find out now though, however Nero I think automatically encodes to NTSC.

When I put in a disc it says "This type of disc can not be played. Please insert a different disc."

As for my PC, when I play the DVD's in my PC they play fine. When I play them in my DVD player they either don't play at all, or I have 1 that play's, but it get's all choppy about an hour into it when I play it either in my DVD player or on my PS2 (that was my original problem) but it plays just fine on my PC, no choppyness so I don't understand what's wrong and it's really frustrating.

For the player problem, I would start by using g-spot to determine if it is PAL or NTSC. If it is PAL, try encoding again, but force NTSC output - you can do this in the settings for ConvertXtoDVD.

Not a big fan of the PS2 for reliable, consistent DVD playback, so any problems it has may simply be PS2 problems.

Where in g-spot would it say if it's PAL or NTSC? and in imgtool what does it mean to make an image? how's that differant than having the actual avi/vob files?

    Look at the resolution and frame rate. PAL - 720 x 576 @ 25 fps. NTSC 720 x 480 @ either 23.976 or 29.976 fps.

imgtool classic creates an ISO - an image of the DVD disc as if you had copied from a disc in the first place. Imgburn is a superior burning engine to Nero for DVD burning, however it needs an ISO image, not the file structures.

can you use imgtool to create an ISO of a file and not of a disc? Like can I make an ISO of an avi file that's on my hard drive? or an mpg? or does it only work with physical discs that it makes an ISO of off the disc in your drive?

There's nothing wrong with burning with Nero, that's not your problem. I've burned hundreds of discs from ConvertXtoDVD output using Nero Express. You don't have to jump through any new hoops yet. Check that it's set to NTSC (as was said) in ConvertXtoDVD. It could also be the discs you are using. What brand are you using? You might want to try a 'Transfer Rate' test in Nero CD\DVD speed and see how your burn looks.

I'm using HP DVD -R's 16x. I'll try the TRansfer Rate test. I hope that helps, so far it's happened with all the movies I've burned though, they start out fine and then they all get choppy, auido and video get distorted, blocky, sometimes cut to a black screen and skip to the next frame, and it lasts for like 10-30 min of the movie I'd say (I haven't checked exactly how long it lasts) and then they are fine again. And it's in differnt points on differnt movies, like the first movie I burned it was an hour and twelve minutes into the movie, the second movie it was only like a half hour into the movie and the third it was like 45 min into the movie.
