    Hi,

    I want to use either VirtualDubMod or VirtualDubMPEG to make clips from DVD's I have tried this with a clip i downloaded from internet and it work.

    But here is my problem. When i rip a DVD the file is too big to work properly. When the frame size is 720x544 and the file is over 1 GB then it will too slow in VirtualDub and the end result plays too slow too. It is like it takes 2 or 3 sec to play 1 sec of the file.

    I think this has too do with my CPU. It is only 256 mb and cannot be updated faster. So my solution would be to make the file smaller. Preferably to 352x240 or 352x480. I have tried to shrink the files using DVDshrink, but the sound is off. After using Rejig i have no sound at all.

    I am sure i am doing something wrong, i just cannot figure out what.

    So my question is: how can i make the files smaller? What tools should i use for it. And what is it called to go (for example) from 720x480 to 352x240. (i don't know the english word, which is why i have a hard time finding info on this site.)

    Thanks for any help you can give me!

    Your machine is so slow it may take many hours to resize down to something playable. Look at something like avi.net or super to reduce your resolution and file sizes down to something your machine can manage. But be prepared for a long wait.

  4. VirtualDub/MPEG2/Mod isn't optimized for playback so it won't play video as well as a DVD/media player.

    You can use VirtualDub's Resize filter to shrink the frame size down to something your computer can handle:

    Video -> Full Processing Mode
    Video -> Filters...
    Add -> Resize

    Set the Width and Height (480x360? 320x240?), I recommend you use Lanczos3 as the Filter Mode.

    Be sure to use an appropriate compression codec. The default is to save uncompressed RGB which will give you very large files that won't play smoothly.

    I am not sure what you mean by this. It sounds like something i could pull off (me being a newby) What would be an appropriate compression codec. Do you mean something like AutoGk or vob2mpg?

    And what do you mean by 'the default is to save uncompressed RGB which will give you very large files that won't play smoothly'?

  7. If you want to try it with VirtualDub, after the resizing settings given earlier, select:

    Video -> Compression...

    Select Xvid as the codec and press the Configure button. The defaults are probably OK for a biginner -- press the Load Defaults button.

    Then Save as AVI.
