The simplest way is to get a Divx capable DVD player. Then you can play them back with no change.

I assume you are talking about filling the whole screen with image. If so, you would have to crop the avi and re-encode. If you don't want to/can't buy a new player, then you must convert to DVD. This usually means resizing up at the cost of some quality. The cost will be much higher if you want to needlessly crop the image to fill the screen.

If you want it to fit a full screen (you don't seem to want it widescreen) then you have to crop the ends (left and right) off it.

If you want to convert to DVD, then personal preference would be ConvertXtoDVD for simplicity. But it won't crop the image for you. If you want to do that then it becomes more complicated.

  6. Did you try pushing the zoom button?

Also, XBMC can format to the correct screen size but that requires an xbox.

The zoom button is the easiest and most effective way to do that. Any other method method would require cropping, resizing and/or converting the video to another format... all of which are going to degrade the quality of the video.

And some day you may come to your senses and realize you didn't want to chop the sides off the movie after all.

For the love of God, why would you want to purposely loose almost 1/2 of the picture just because you don't like black bars. Time to upgrade to 10x9
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD!
