cutting out certain pieces of avi??

could someone please let me know the easiest way this can be done.

ive searched and searched everywhere and couldnt get anything going. any help would be highly appreciated.

Hi willhenderson,

Use VirtualDub - there's plenty of guides.

Be sure to set it to use the same codec as that of your AVI, otherwise it deafults to uncompressed AVI and you'll get huuuuuge files.

Check codecs with GSpot or AVICodec.

If you just do cuts I believe you can save in Direct Stream Copy without having to re-encode

how is this that i can check and use a certain codec within the program so i get a smaller file. i know i have a few codec packs installed on my system? should i look for others at the given sites or?? i dont know exactly what needs to be done.

Open the source file in either of these to identify the codec. Then, in VirtualDub, you click Video -> Compression and set the codec.

Click on the "Tools" link to the left, and then look in the "Video Editors (MPG/DVD)" category. I don't edit MPG's so can't recommend any.

It depends if you only want to cut at I-frames, or cut anywhere and re-encode the cut, or cut and build in transitions etc.

Video editor and encoder. It can edit, encode, requantize MPEG and AVI including DivX. Very much like VirtualDub, but can also encode to VCD/SVCD/DVD mpg.

Like Guns1inger pionts out, you should use Direct Stream for both audio and video to avoid unnecessary reencoding, wasting both time and quality. Encoding to the same or different codec doesn't matter - If you can avoid reencoding (as you cvan, when just cutting parts out of an AVI) it should be avoided.
For mpg cutting, I've found nothing better than Womble mpeg VCR. Again, no reencoding takes place.

right, how exactly can this be done?

Ah - You thought Direct Stream was another application? No, it's just a setting in VirtualDub!
