I have looked at a number of threads here that discuss modifying Canon printers to be able to print on DVD labels. I was thinking of purchasing an Epson R340 which has the tray to be able to print on DVD'S but now I am thinking about buying the Canon Pixma iP6600D. Can anyone tell me which tray is required to modify this printer? ie: tray A,B,C or D and does anyone know if this printer has the necessary rollers as standard equipment? The guide from Ebay is not very explicit on this matter.
    Thanks

I have the Canon Pixma 5000. I think the 6600 is similar but I'm not certain. Mine takes the type B tray, which I bought off eBay. The roller assembly is not necessary. I do not have it, and everything works perfectly.

I have been reading many of the posts on using a modified Canon printer to print on CD/DVD'S. My question is : is it worth all the trouble and hassle to modify the various Canon printers and possibly void the warranty rather than use an Epson printer that comes with this capability right out of the box? Is the Canon that much superior in print quality? It seems to me that the cost of inks is pretty much the same . Am I missing something here?
    Thanks

  4. I'm guessing that if you already had a Canon printer of a particular vintage, it might be worth it to do the mod just for fun and to save a few $$$ on a new printer. But with the price of ink refills and printers nowadays, I'm tempted to get one of the Epson's myself.

Disclaimer: I've got an older Canon i850 and it's excellent for photographs, but the quality depends a great deal on the kind of paper I use. So I'm curious how different inks work on different types of printable media.

I tend to use either Sharpies or hub labels on my discs, too, as I'm cheap and lazy.

It's not really what you asked about, but have you checked out Lightscribe technology? See
    http://www.lightscribe.com
It can't do color, but it does give you the possibility of printing labels directly on Lightscribe CDs/DVDs. I've never been interested at all in labels for my discs, but I bought a Ligthscribe burner and I love it.

I have an older Epson (Stylus Photo 780) and I suppose if I could modify it someway with a tray that would allow printing on a CD/DVD I would hang on to it rather than looking to buy a new printer. I have looked into lightscribe and as I understand , it is only capable of black right now . I also see that the blank disks are more expensive and it takes quite a bit of time to print one. It would appear at this point that my next printer will probably be an Epson. I appreciate the comments.
