I am having a problem joining 2 avi files with virtualdub.
I am getting the usual pop up saying "virtualdub has detected an improper VBR stream",so i have saved both avi files audio as wav.
I now have to large wav files which i want to add to each individual video file.
What's the correct procedure i need to follow so that i can add the audio wav files to each individual video file and then join together to make one complete avi file.
Many thanks for any help given.

    virtualdub,
    open the video
audio->wav source and select the wav file.
video->direct stream copy (the video will just be copied, no conversion)
file->save as new a avi file.

you can also save the avi with vbr audio directly to an avi with wav audio, video->direct stream copy, audio->full processing, file->save as avi.

This may be a roundabout way of doing it, but I'd load first AVI, then load the first wav as audio for that, save AVI again with Video Direct Stream, audio to full processing (configure codec - maybe mp3 @192 kbps?)
    Repeat with 2nd AVI/WAV.
Lastly, load first AVI, then 2nd with Append AVI segment, and finally save AVI with both audio and video Direct Stream.

The only thing to watch for, FWIW & all, is if the audio ends before the video -- in that case, unless it's something fixed in latest v/dub version, joining will cause audio files to butt against each other, throwing 2nd part out of sync. Only way I know to fix it is to pad short audio first, & again all this only applies if audio ends early. Mention it because with many such videos it does.

Tried what you said baldrick and worked perfectly!
Only thing is does it the audio have to stay as a wav file,as this makes the whole file double in size?
Can it be converted back to say mp3?
    Thanks

Once you have finished your joins, yes.

You could be wayyyy more efficient here - there's no need to decompress to a seperate WAV file at all.

    Open first AVI.
Go to Video > Direct Stream Copy.
Go to Audio > Full Processing.
    Go to Audio > Compression.
Choose MP3 and whatever bitrate you want.
Go to File > Save as AVI.

Repeat for 2nd vid. Then load first AVI, append segment, both video and audio on Direct Stram Copy, Save as AVI.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Will VDub reencode a VBR mp3 AVI (that it complains about) to an in sync CBR mp3 AVI?

AFAIK it should. After all, it has to decompress back to raw before it can "compress" to PCM WAV, so if it's already decompressing, then there's no real point going via WAV, is there ?

    Note:
Must include caveat that I've never actually tried this. Theory is solid though
    If in doubt, Google it.
