How do you turn off Philips DVP 642 completely (not standby mode) with out unplug AC?

when you turn it off, the player goes to Standby Mode and the LED keep light on.

The only way is to unplug it. It's not really "standby mode", the unit is off, the LED is just an indication the unit has power.

I think it can respnd to remote control command while on "Stand by", so it is using power for more than just the anoyingly bright red led. It is also doing some logic. I wonder how much power it is drawing while on Stand by" - Paul

At least the IR circuit inside is ALIVE all the time even when it is on Standby mode.

  6. Just about every product in your home consumes a little bit of power. Over a course of the year it may cost you between $20-$80. Certainly any device that uses a remote control will consume minute amounts of current.

Get yourself the Killawatt (I bought mine on ebay), it is much more convenient than trying to measure current with a amp meter.

The most revealing item for me was that my sub-woofer was chewing up 58 watts of power in STANDBY mode! Now I only turn it on for the some 5 hours a month that I actually use it.

I just unplug it whenever I'm not using it. Sure its a hassle but I know this player is reknowned for dying from overheating or something like that, so I figure in the long run it'll last me longer if I keep it unplugged when its not in use.

Off topic: Does anyone know how to deal with the constant ticking sound this player makes? Any way to lessen the sound?

The ticking is most likely a defect of your unit or media. Mine is mostly quiet.

I've surfed alot about this player around the Net and alot of people complain about the infamous ticking noise. A mild irritance, but such a good player I can live with it.

I've never heard my DVP624 make such a sound.

Plays okay. Never had a problem with it. Got it when it first became available at CompUSA.

    Maybe just lucky, I guess.
Whatever doesn't kill me, merely ticks me off. (Never again a Sony consumer.)

  15. Some DVD Recorders with hard drives still use a lot of energy even when "off/standby mode". The HD is left running in some units, and you can't turn it off! A Disgrace! The JVC MH30S you can turn the HD off, but it still uses 16.2W???? A unit should not need to draw much power, just waiting on the user to turn it on.

These values are from the manuals... Notice how the JVC 100S with no hard drive, uses a little more energy in "off" mode, then the Pioneer with HD, 0.42W . The JVC MH30S is the worst with 16.2W when powered "off". That is just way too much. Pioneer at least has some ethnical value remaining in their products. Looks like they still care to make energy saving models.

    JVC DR-MH30S
    power on: 35W
    power off: 16.2W

    JVC DR-M100S (no HD)
    power on: 30W
    power off: 2.7W

    Lite-on 5045
    power consumption: 45W
    power off: N/A

    Pioneer 533HS
    power on: 43W
    power off: .42W
