Playing MS-MPEG4 v2 .avi files on OS X?

Can this be done? I downloaded the OS X version of WMP which claimed that it supported the codec, but when I tried to open it, it gave me an illegal file error. Would converting the file to .asf work, and if so, how would that be done.

I'm open to ideas about it working under OS 9 as well.

I've already tried it, and it doesn't. Maybe I should have mentioned that, but the DiVX ;-) software won't (to my little knowledge) play MS-MPEG4.
