Posting in a topic then reporting the topic for the very same thing you just posted.

Example: Poster sees topic that he perceives to have political overtones, posts his own political views then reports topic.

The only problem with that is what if you wrote to answer a tech question ten posts in but re-read the original post and discover it really was a warez post that nobody noticed??? Then you'd be reporting the post because it was, say, asking how to defeat drm but you had responded on an offshoot question about audio conversion. That seems very plausible.

Automatic cards aren't good because if somebody's on the bubble but has been a good forum member for a few months and has one of these "oops I posted in a bad thread" moments would get banned automatically. Even though they were trying to close down a bad thread.

I still think case by case assesment, though slower, is more appropriate. The mods have been and seem to be very open to discussion about honest mistakes or misinterpretations.

You shouldn't be skimming thru topics anyway, what you have to post may have already been convered or have no bearing on what is being covered.

How can you respond top something if you don't know what the context of the thread is?

That would be a call for the mods to make.

@coalman: I assume that by saying "automatic" you mean a standard practice rather than an actual machine generated card. This one post that has been linked was kind of a weird post to start with and it got cut off pretty quick once it took another weird turn. It is nice to have a little bit of flexibility in the rules and diversity in the ranks.

I think this is why we have moderators. Nothing should be automatic. You find quite often someone reports a topic after participating in it. There are even those who report topics they themselves have started.

Let the moderators do their jobs and keep the rules simple and short. Too many rules or automatic this's and that's and . . . well

Agree 100%, but I've seen it happen before where someone will explain how to do something with the knowledge that the original post is against the forum rules then go report it... makes no sense and seems very hypocritical to me.

Why are they posting something that clearly breaks the rules then reporting it? I'm not suggesting this for someone who has posted in a thread that breaks the forum rules, just in one where they themselves have broken the forum rules and have the gall to report it.

    @coalman

I do see your point And please forgive me for laughing, I just find it kind of trivial. Some days I am more tollerent of folks than other days and I assume that you are just having a tougher day.

I don't read too many of the "Report this thread post" or make any myself (That I can remember) But I do kind of feel that a member should either post a freindly reminder or nudge the offender in the right direction in the existing thread, OR "Report this thread" without jumping in themselves. Having it both ways does seem a bit much. I can see the potential for a freindly suggestion turning sour real fast (Sometimes tone doesn't carry well when typed out)

Coalman - I just had a good example of why it should not be automatic. Somebody posted a video question in offtopic. I offered some advice but reported the thread so it could be moved to the correct forum. Now why should that be an automatic yellow?

DUDE!!!!!!! fellow michigander.... step away from the pipe!!!!!!!

I'm sure he is talking about "Reports" of breaking the board rules, not "reports" for wrong forums or other trivial things that do NOT break forum rules

Me thinks yoda313 is too busy watching Episode III and not thinking about this thread :P

  13. @ TheCoalman & others

I can see how this would be annoying but I don't feel happy asking people not to post in topics they have reported or intend to report.

I also don't see an auto card system working here.

There are alot of reasons for posting in a thread you will report later on. One example may be in the Latest News forum, someone may have posted news that has already been posted before by someone else, hence you post in the thread providing a link to the previously posted thread. Then you report the thread as its an additional thread which is no longer required.

That's not what I'm referring too...... to clarify your post in the thread would have to be of a nature that it breaks the rules itself.

Poster A: Where can I download warez?

Poster B: Well you can get them at abc123.com... (then runs off to report post)

I've seen it happen once to many times, as I said that's very hypocritical to me to be posting information then reporting the post...

  16. At this time, none of the mods believe this is a particular problem that needs attention, other than the usual case by case assessment.
