Do normal standalone DVD players play DL disks or do I have to buy a new one?

I have tried several players with +dl. All the Sony and Toshiba ones I have tried play the dvd+rDL media fine, as does the PS2

DVD+R DL has proven to be a little hit & miss to say the least. There is a great thread here that answers pretty much all DL questions:
https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=225001&highlight=layer+first+burn
Based on reading this thread I've found 2 main hints:
1. If your drive supports bitsetting set your DL book-type to DVD-ROM. That increases the compatibility drastically.
2. Verbatim DVD+R DL seem to be the best media to use.
I've burned several DL discs using that thread's advice and they've worked fine in my players - even my old Pioneer DVL-909 DVD/LD player from 1998. -
Be sure to set your booktype (bitsetting) to DVD-ROM or some standalones may not play them.
