What is everyones opinion on using a DV camcorder to digitize analog footage, and then transfering via firewire?

I want to archive VHS to CD, and from reading posts on this forum I get the impression that analog capture cards just give you a load headaches, and in the end you just get crap quality.

I am also considering a bridge, but camcorders with analog in, seem to be just as good, and of course you can use it to shoot film.

  2. I do it all the time, I capture movies and concerts from DirecTV and make DVD-R's as well as SVCD's/VCD's or even creating VHS copies. I use a Canon ZR25 cam which works very well. I'd love to get the new ZR50 cam because it's got digital pass-thru so you dont have to record to tape before getting it in the computer.

  3. unclebud,

I have a camera zr25 and I can't digitize my tape collection, because I get a "digital copyright error" message, saying I am not allowed to copy it. How do you circumvent this?
I want to die in my sleep like my father, not like his passengers.

  4. After dealing with a couple of different capture cards and having loads of problems I saw on this forum about using a digital camcorder to do your capturing. Since I was soon going to be in the market for one I decided to go ahead and get one now. I got a Sony TRV-340. It has the analog to digital conversion with pass thru. It works great. I use Adobe Premier to capture with no loss frames, TMPGE to convert, but I'm still looking for a good burning program. I've used Nero for simple menu's but my audio goes out of sync using Nero. I'm going to try Video Pack 5 tonight or tomorrow to see if it solves my problem. I don't think it's the conversion that does it because it seems fine after that but before burning.
