    Last Tuesday I saw a "PVR-260" in Fry's electronics. I think it said it was for MCE. I was in a hurry.

    When I got home I looked it up on the Hauppauge site but didn't see a PVR-260. Was I imagining this? What did I see?

  2. Are you sure it said 260? Which fries? What state?

  3. Either a PVR-150, PVR-250, or PVR-500.
    They all come in MCE versions (no remote control or IR blaster).

    Fry's Electronics in Sacramento, CA. I was picking someone up at the airport.

    Anyway, I was walking down the aisle and saw this but didn't have time to read the details. Maybe it was all a mistake.

    No it was a boxed product. I haven't seen a PVR-250 locally in some months.
    Never mind. I see no internet links.

    For some other possible explanations..

    I found these using google.

    Go here:
    --> http://www.homelanfed.com/status.php

    You might have seen a variation of this at fry's. And read the
    13th paragraph.

    And here:
    --> http://forums.snapstream.com/vb/printthread.php?t=8520&pp=40

    See Julia's post.

    Goggles search string that I used in finding the above:
    --> http://www.google.com/search?as_q=&num=10&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=pvr+260&as_o...h=&safe=images

    OK, the plot thickens.

    I called the department manager at the Fry's store.

    He told me they have a pile of PVR-160 not PVR-260. He said the font might look like a 2 but it is a 1.

    So what is a PVR-160?

    Price is 129.99 vs 99.99 for the PVR-150. The sales guy couldn't describe it other than it looked like an external box but he had calls waiting and couldn't go to the shelf. He confirmed the model number on his computer as PVR-160.

    I'll try to get down there for a closer look next weekend.

    Maybe Hauppauge just changed the number from 150 to 160 so Fry's has a model no one else has ... thus they don't have to deal with price matching.

    This happens alot in electronics.

    For instance the Pioneer 533 model stand alone DVD recorder is sold at Walmart as the 531 and only Walmart has that model but it is exactly the same thing as the 533 which everyone else has. Go to the Pioneer website and you will find the 533 listed but not the 531.

    Costco does this as does Sam's Club.

    So that's my guess as to what it is.

    No Fry's in my local area so I really know nothing about them.

    OK mystery solved and Google doesn't seem to know about it yet. I passed Fry's Sacramento today and checked out the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 160, $129 list price. PVR-150 was priced $99.

    The PVR-160 is a deluxe version of the PCI bus PVR-150 MCE. It comes with a different MCE 2005 certified PVR remote control and an external infrared control transmitter box that is said to control satellite and cable tuners plus other devices.

    MCE 2005 is required. The hardware is Conexant CX23416 MPEG 1/2 hardware encoder that works over a range of 2.5-12 Mb/s for MPeg2.

    Very interesting OK here a run down about the PVR 160 the WinTV-PVR 160 is old 'Roslyn' base card, This was an OEM Media Center card they sold to PC OEMs but the Retail customers, Fry's, asked them to package it for a retail upgrade market, It should work fine with Media Center.
    It has one big advantage over the other WinTV-PVR: it supports a live TV mode, which is not supported on the WinTV-PVR-150, 250, 350, 500 USB and USB2.
