Whenever i externally place a file onto my computer (From DVD disc) it changes to windows media & then virtual dub says "Couldnt locate compressor for format XVID (Unknown) virtual dub requires a (VFW) compatible to decompress video. Directshow codecs, such as those shown by windows media player are not suitable. (How can I stop AVI's turning into WMA formats on my PC ?)

Your computer is not converting your xvid avi files to wma, what it is doing is associating video files with the Window Media Player. VDub is not having an issue with that association, you really do not have the correct codecs for Vdub to work with your xvid files.

File association just gives your computer a prioity for which player you want to use to play video and or music. You will need to go into WMA and unassociate video. But even if you do that, that will not fix the problem with your xvid files and Vdub.

Search this site, the tools section, for xvid codecs and install.

You helped me last time (Which I was grateful). I wonder if you can help me again. After i've Vdubbed & TMPged an AVI to make it an MPEG. When I try to
burn the Mpeg in Nero I keep recieving this message:-

" The video file C:\ etc. etc. is not video CD complient. The video will be re-encoded to video CD format before burning".

The Mpeg then encodes - for about 30 mins then does not burn ?

    1) What am I doing wrong in TMPeg ?
    2) How can I get an Mpeg to just burn without encoding ?

Use the correct VCD template (PAL, NTSC, NTSC film) and Nero shouldn't ask to re-encode.

There should be a box you can tick/untick to do with compliance so that Nero will burn it as is. Then you have an XVCD instead of a VCD.
