Afternoon,
Ever since connecting this Seria ATA Drive to the PC using a new PCI card i bought ive noticed that every 40 seconds or so there will be a freeze for 2 secs and then it will go back to normal.
If im downloading/copying/moving files to and from the hard drive will they get corrupted because of thingsl ike this happening or should they all be okay?
Thanks.

One easy way to change IRQs is to change the slot the card is plugged into. The slot directly below the AGP card is one to avoid as it's IRQ is often shared. Try the third one down or lower.
If that doesn't help, then you can make IRQ changes in BIOS. Consult your motherboard manual. It should also tell you about any shared IRQs.
If the drive is freezing for 2 seconds every 40 seconds, that could cause problems. It has a good possibility of corrupting data. I don't know if a IRQ conflict is causing it, but it's a good place to start. -
Jeez didnt realise that man.
If this is guna corrupt my data how would be a way to find out what data is corrupt and if it is corrupt?
Becuase i aint guna go looking thru every file to see if its corrupt cos thass juss long lol.
Maybe a bit of software which wld tell me if i have errors?
Now another issue ive had with this pc which i have mentioned to people many times but they dont know.
Since buying the PC it will randomly just lock up completely nothing will respond apart from the reset button.
It will just about be ok if i leave it for 20 mins after its loaded windows.
If i dont and go str8 into doing something it will lock up and will do this repeatadly about 6 times after resetting which does no good to the drive at all.
Some people have said get drivers but ive no idea what 2 get. Somep pl said BIOS upgrade but my Dad said is too risky.
Does anyone know what it definately is.
Answer the top paragraph then this one,

If they are corrupt, you won't be able to use them. Easy to know.
The problem you have with the drive may not bother them at all, but interrupting a data stream when the drive starts and stops can eventually cause problems.
Your other problem could be caused by too many things to diagnose easily. Do you get any error boxes? If so, what do they say?
A few things that could cause that: Bad RAM modules, Weak or failing power supply are a couple. There are many more hardware possibilities.
Or it could be entirely in software, but you should get error boxes for those. I doubt if a BIOS upgrade would do any good.
You would have to pin down when and how it locks up better. What programs are running, what you are doing. Could be many things. -
For slow reaction or lockups after windows starts you may want to look at any old software you have installed. I had a customers computer in my shop several times for many reasons. Each time there were symptoms such as you describe where that if you allowed windows to boot up and waited several minutes (10-20) the computer would somewhat behave normally. However, if you immediately started performing tasks you would have slow responses and eventual lockup. After much diagnosis I finally found the problem. A 2002 install(after a format) of Norton Anti-Virus was the cause. After I uninstalled this and installed a more up to date version the entire problem went away. This also solved other lockups and various issues with that machine.

Hi yeah i seem to remember installing norton AV and im not sure but it might have been since then its started doing wierd things.
Ill try of what both u said.
Im sorry man i refuse to install norton on here again from the amount of problems with it last time lol.
Almost killed the machine put it to a stand still.
Cheers fellas. -
Looking at the event log these are the errors i get when the freezes happen:
Under System:
Initialization failed because the transport refused to open initial Addresses.
Under Application: The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was C0000005 from line 44 of d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemo bj.cpp. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.
Whats this and what do i do here fellas?
Cheers!! -
SP2 issue I think.do u have norton on our pc? try to disable your firewall/anti virus and update your NIC and see if that helps.
-
Yep have SP2 and had same issues b4 SP2.
Dont have norton on here, did have but not nemore.
Tried the firewall and AV but no luck mate. (I thought that may have been the cause too)
NIC, whats that then? -
I think i may know what it is.
My Front USB ports are terrible, they cannot hanbdle things for a long time for example USB Hard drives.
Theyll throw the devices off whilst copying to and from usb to ide.
It has been known to bugger up plenty of USB drives.
I get the feeling its a conflict with something or my USB controller.
Im not sure if its because i have 2 video cards in which conflict but im pretty sure these issues were happening b4 putting in the new video card.
Someone who is familiar with this problem or knows a lot please answer if you're pretty sure you know what it is?
It's been really bad today. -
The probelm is almost certainly the kludgy PCI card you bought to let you use SATA on your system. Solution: either change to a motherboard that supports SATA on board, or ditch the SATA drive and go back to a PATA drive.
SATA, like all bleeding edge technologies, is still garbageware and prone to plenty of problems. People who live on the bleeding edge must either accept these kinds of problems, or spend a bunch 'o bucks to solve 'em. If you want state-of-the-art, prepare to empty your wallet.
The rest of us will continue to make do with PATA drives & mobos without these kinds of problems until SATA matures and stabilizes. -
I think ive juss found out what is causing all the freezes.
I remember putting a creative soundcard in the PC with that front panel with all the audio connectors.
The pc didnt like it and kept randomly restarting so i removed it.
Tried it a few days ago on a different computers and since then the pc i put it on is restarting so i removed it and now its locking up justl ike this one.
It seems its done something to either the hardware or software.
What would sort this out?
Im pretty sure its that osund crad i had in and took out again and the front panel.
Cheers. -
I am now pretty sure it is the audio.
Whenever i open anything that involves audio say i open a video, the audio wlkd cut off and vid wld carry on going and approx 2 mins after that the whole thing wld freeze.
Atm i am pretty sure its to do with the audio, was wondering if theres any fixes for it?
Maybe update my audio drivers?
Using realtek 97. -
Ill ave to ask my Dad to ave a butchers hook of that one mate cos i aint sure boss.
-
ok remove all the PCI cards u have and keep the SATA only also remove all the driver for the cards too and see what happens
