  1. how to check what codec you have in the OS?

im running windows xp, and not able to open avi files (captured from a PAL DV cam by adobe) using TMPGEcn, i think the problem is with the codec (as advised by one member of vcdhelp), but i have no idea what codec is CORRECTLY installed in the system.

  2. go to tools and look for the codec that will open avi files do not worry what one you have on your system as this does not matter as it will not let you play avis
there can only be one:but its not me

  3. Export the clip as AVI and not Microsoft DV. But it's dead slow, i use the avisynth plugin instead, look for it in the tools section.

  5. Not sure if it's in the same place under XP, but under Win 2000
you go to Control Panel, select Sounds and Multimedia, then select the Hardware tab and scroll down to the Video Codecs item in the list. Highlight that item and click on properties and you'll get a list of the installed codecs on your system.

  6. i had check the codec in the system and found divx 4.12 properly installed (and many others),

isn't that suffiecient enough to allow TMPGEnc to read avi files?

  8. summary

TMPGEnc is not opening some avi files (the files captured by adobe in PAL format), the first i did i checking the enviroment setting and tried all possiblities.
Then i checked the codec, i think i have the right one.

Media player can open and play the file, doesn't that mean i have the right codec?

what else i should try to make TMPG works?

    pls help
