if you are just going to play on your computer you can use ac3filter and use the gains the increase the volume.

Yes, if you go the simple route. But if it's really important to you, you can extract 6 mono wavs from the 5.1 AC3, increase the volume on each wav, then reencode to AC3. Unfortunately, I don't think there's any free 5.1 AC3 encoder.

It can. . Though I tried to make 2 pass automatic max gain and in most cases it is 0.5 db. So really unnoticeable. It seems 6 wav way should be better, but you must decide which channels to gain - obviously under mixing the chanels back together you may have sound distortion if not appropriate gain is applied. Just some thoughts.

I'm looking for something that does that. I want to split the file into its separate tracks and bring down the action volume while bringing up the speaking volume. I think they should mix the DVD sound more for homes instead of leaving the theater sound intact, or give you another sound track option. I hate when you constantly have to adjust the volume when it's late. Deja vu.

You can use BeSweet to extract 6 waves from a AC3 file. You have to select "Six Waves" as the output. Then edit each file as you want before encoding again.

Even if you separate the tracks, don't be so sure the background sound and speech is separated. You're still in for quite some imaginative filtering, I'm afraid...

... Very true. Lot of effort is required. Better to increase vol of all channels and downmix to 2 channel AC3.
