I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature, but there is a HUGE difference in the size of the DVDs made by these 2 versions.
Example:
Original mpeg: 605 megs 352x240 NTCS 80 minutes mpeg2/ac3 stereo
In both cases: Toast video tab is used, create DVD menu is on, "MPEG and dolby digital audio will remain unchanged" is claimed. Save as disk image used for test.
Toast 6.0.7: after toast has remultiplexed and written the image, the final images size is 674 megs. 70 megs larger than the original.
Toast 6.0.9: after toast has remultiplexed and written the image, the final images size is 808 megs. 203 megs larger than the original.
The size difference is because of differences in the size of the resulting VOB files, and in neither case has the sound been converted.
From MPEG streamclip:
Stream: 07.VOB
Type: VOB program stream
Duration: 1:21:46
Data Size: 673.33 MB
Readable: 673.32 MB
Bit Rate: 1.15 Mbps
Video Tracks:
224 MPEG, 352 × 240, 4:3, 29.97 fps, 8.20 Mbps, progressive
Audio Tracks:
128 AC3 2/0, 48 kHz, 128 kbps
Stream Files:
07.VOB (673.33 MB)
Stream: 09.VOB
Type: VOB program stream
Duration: 1:21:46
Data Size: 807.01 MB
Readable: 807.00 MB
Bit Rate: 1.38 Mbps
Video Tracks:
224 MPEG, 352 × 240, 4:3, 29.97 fps, 8.20 Mbps, progressive
Audio Tracks:
128 AC3 2/0, 48 kHz, 128 kbps
Stream Files:
09.VOB (807.01 MB)
Demuxing, in both case, renders one 531 meg m2v file, and one 74 meg ac3 file.
Is it possible for someone to confirm and or explain these differences. In the case of a 4 video 4 gig DVD, the size difference between what 6.0.7 and 6.0.9 delivers is over 400 megs.
Thanks,
Alph

the key seems to be:
Bit Rate: 1.38 Mbps
better bitrate = larger files?

Thanks for the response.
The test was with a previously encoded mpeg that was being re-multiplexed by toast. The bit-rate therefore was the same in each case.
I ended up taking this to the Toast forum: it seems it has to do with standalone DVD player compatibility.
