well there is also the defensive team and offense team - so in theory, the players only play about 1/2 a game max. anyway ...

Wait, a whole different team to play the offensive and the defesive?! so what, first half of the game is all attacking one way, second half is all attacking the other? what a load of crap! and how boring! in rugby the ball can go either way at any time!

jeez, american football sounds more like cricket every day.....

    errrr no ....

you try to make a first down in 4 tries (american football that is - canada is different rules) or a touchdown and if you dont , you hand the ball to the other side ...so they can try ...

each time a "switch" you change all the players ..

you know -- writting it down it does sound lame ... but these are big guys non the less ..

The pads and the extra rest for the players actually make football more unsafe than Rugby.

Sort like when cars got "safer" with seatblets and such the fatality rate went up because the speed limits went up and people think they are safe and go faster than the speed limit.

I played both american football and rugby football for years. I know from experience the hits in AF are much harder.

Worst injury I saw with my own eyes in rugby was a knee to the forehead resulting in ten stitches. Worst in AF broken neck resulting in driving a wheelchair for life.

Both are very hard on the body though. Unless you are a defensive back or a kicker in AF they rarely get hit.
    snappy phrase

    I don't know what you're talking about.

Ok, it makes a bit more sense. it does still sound pants though, after four goes at it you all stop, swap teams and just pass the ball over in a friendly manner. and why only ten yards? from centre to try line is 35m in rugby, so if you gain possesion by your own try line you have a 70m run to the opposition try line.

    Hello,

    Um..... GET OVER IT! :P :P :P :P

And actually 10 yards is the distance for a first down. YOU WANT TO GET AS MANY YARDS AS POSSIBLE.

That's why they call it "THE BOMB" when they throw a deep pass..... (no not the bomb as in mrs capmaster :P :P :P)

    Hello,

BJ_M - got any snapshots of that brawl between the WINGS and AVS when MCCARTY pummeled LEMIUEX??????

That revenge punch for the sucker punch on DRAPER has to be the highlight of the 90's for the REDWINGS - besides the first STanley Cup in 42 years in 97 of course - which by the way occured on my 18th birthday - June 7, 1997

This rule is similar in AF. You can pass the ball backwards to another player at anytime. The forward pass is different you can only make one and it has to be from behind the line of scrimmage which would be where the ball originally was placed before play started for that down.

You'll notice I said the running part was brute force but even that has it's strategies. If I had to compare I would bet that tactically football is probably on top of any sport. This is one of the reasons you see so many players going in and out of the game. Not all of them are 300+, you could have speedsters that could almost compete with Olympic athletes (not quite though) They have to make good match ups and that is what the offense is looking for is that mismatch.... AF football has often been compared to a chess game. Every movement by each player is specific for each play and there could be hundreds, even when running the ball. A defender may even let the opposition player get the best of him on purpose depending on the play. They have different groups of players for different situations, for example if they need to go 1 yard for a first down in most cases there going to use a runner who's a little bigger to get that extra couple of pounds as opposed to a fast runner who might not be able to move the pile. Believe it or not it's very complicated.
