all i did was 1-.98^4
at least one always means 1 - probability that none will be defective
meingot 7.76%
took all of 3 seconds, but i'm prolly wrong. i saw 8% elsewhere in this topic, so i hope they just rounded the answer they got and that it was same as mine![]()

It's not 8%. By that logic, if you have 1000 units, and you only pull out 50 units, then your chances of getting a defective one are 100%.

I'm sorry to have brought everyone into this. I'll just have to let you know what the answer is when I get the test back.

I don't think you can get the answer without more information. What if the total number of items was 4? Then the probability would be 100%. The probability would be totally different if there were 100 items.
I'm probably wrong, but it seems like they just threw in the 2% to throw you off. Does this make sense:
4 items and 4 selected, so probability = 100%
8 items and 4 selected, so probability = 50%
16 items and 4 selected, so probability = 25%
Therefore, probability = (4 / total number of items).
Then again, I guess that doesn't hold water because if probability of an item being deffective is 100%, then if there are 8 items and 4 are selected, the probability of getting a defective item would always be 100% and not 50%...
This is going to be driving me nuts until I figure it out... when you get the solution, please see if you can also get how to arrive at the solution -
No problem, I will post the solution and the steps to getting there as soon as I know anything.

I think I have the answer... I cheated though. I asked my engineer dad
He says probability is a tricky subject and it usually depends on how you look at it, but the way he would do it is this... If 2% of the widgets would be deffective, then he would take 2% of the 4 that were selected... which would give you %0.08 probability. -

Why Capmaster --
I've always harbored deep and secret feelings for you ...
Dammit!!! I actually meant to post this in the "Poster Above You" thread!! And no -- I have not been drinking!
Perhaps I should start.
Could you move it there -- perhaps in the appropriate thread it won't look so damn spontaneous and gay !! -
And I thought we were just throwing out quotes from Tombstone
I never knew you felt that way .....wait ...I didn't mean to word it that way
I always thought there was that special something between us. I always pretended to be attracted to tgpo, but it was always you. You thtudly, thweaty beatht you
And, no, I can't take posts from one thread and tack them onto another thread. I can only split them off into their own thread. I hope you're not mad at me .... -
