VOB files to AVI

Help...I'm totally confused.

I'm editing some video for my church, which has purchased a license to use clips from commericial movies.

Here's what I'm trying to accomplish....I want to rip a clip from the DVD. Then I'd like to convert that VOB file to an AVI that I can edit in Adobe Premier.

I know how to rip the clip using DVD Shrink. I then load the VOB into DVD2AVI and save it as an AVI file. However, Adobe won't import the resulting AVI file. WMP won't play the avi file either. What am I doing wrong? There must be a simple solution!

virtualdubmod will accept the vobs directly. From there you can output to avi

I second yoda313 - Having recently done it myself, I confirm you'll get excellent results.

When outputting the AVI from VirtualDubMod, be sure to set the video compression to a DV codec. (Video -> Compression... or Ctrl+P).

If you don't have one installed or it can't be used (I have a problem withe the Canpous DV codec), the Panasonic DV codec works very well.

I had the same issues with DVD2AVI. For others it works for some it doesn't, who knows.

I agree with Yoda313 and daamon, use Vdubmod then save as DV, it will make editing a lot easier in Premiere, but the file size will be larger(DV less compressed than MPEG2) until you convert it back to VOB.

After loading your VOBs in DVD2AVI, you're supposed to Save project, not save AVI. Then, you open the D2V file (that's the output of Save Project), which frameserves the VOBs to your encoder.

I've downloaded VirtualDubMod and the Panasonic codec. I've unzipped the codec but when I right click on it, I don't get the "install" option. I don't have a DV option in VirtualDubMod, either.

You need to right-click on the .INF file that comes with it

As I mentioned, that's what you get when you right-click on the INF file. I'll bet dollars to donuts that someone's right-clicking on the dll

In that case, it might be a privilieges problem - are you logging in with admin rights? You probably need to be...

Extract the 2 files to a directory and then right click.

The files have been unzipped to a folder named pdvcodec.zip. The file I'm right clicking on is PANADV.INF.

The zipper on the Icon in the address bar represents a zip file.
If it was a folder there would be no zipper icon, just a folder icon.

This is why when you right click, you are only getting options available from within a zip file. Go try any other *.inf file on your computer(not in a zip file) and you will see what daamon and jimmalenko are talking about.

I'm running WinXPProSP2 (don't what you're running - Hint: Update your computer details in your profile...) and I get exactly what you're image shows (see below). What appears to be a "Zip" folder, but in fact it's just Windows Explorer being helpful and listing what's in the zip file.

I get the following crash detail when I tried using virtualDubMod to open a file (as described here) created by DVD2AVI, which was ripped with DVDDecrypter:

"An out-of-bounds memory access (access violation) occurred in module 'huffyuv'......while decompressing video frame 0 with "Huffyuv v2.1.1" [biCompression=55594648] (VideoSource.cpp:1823). "

I have download and installed the panasonic codec as well. What could have gone wrong here. I am a nubie here, so I appreciate your help.
