I am looking for a free image program like Norton Ghost. I want to install slackware linux on my computer but I only have 1 hd and don't want to have to reinstall windows just to install slackware. I tried shrinking my ntfs partition but I couldn't because it has bad sectors. So I guess my only real option would be to make an image of my current windows install (its about 8 GB) and burn it to a couple dvds. Then delete my current ntfs... repartition... and restore my windows setup. Is there a free app that can do this that is fairly easy to use (it would be nice if it was on a live-cd or something)?

You can look at Digital Dolly. Don't know if that's what you want.Originally Posted by Garibaldi

Thanks, I'll take a look at that. I AM looking for an app for windows, but the reason I want to make the image is to install inux.

Will this do what I want though? Does it make an actual backup of the drive (since it doesn't copy the files)? So could I use this app to make a copy of my partition, install a brand new cd, and put my install of windows completely on there from that backup?

Well I tried resizing in this and it said I need to defrag so I booted back into windows but at boottime it said"Missing Operating System" and wanted me to insert a bootdisk, I don't even think they make those (except for setup ones) for XP. I guess I'll have to reinstall..... I had most of my info backed up.You can look at Digital Dolly. Don't know if that's what you want.

Perhaps a bit of pain up front (to reinstall XP), but just think - now you can partition resize AND you'll have a fast running machine with a nice small registry (for the time being)

As soon as you reinstall, defrag that puppy. Keep it nice and neat from the start. -
Yeah... it is a good oportunity.... the only thing I really lost was my firefox bookmarks... not that important anywayPerhaps a bit of pain up front (to reinstall XP), but just think - now you can partition resize AND you'll have a fast running machine with a nice small registry (for the time being) smile.gif

Yeah... I made alot of useless ones too.... like links to a whole bunch of linux distros I don't even care about!Sometimes I wish I would *lose* my bookmarks. I can't ever find what I need, I have so many. mad.gif tongue.gif redface.gif

when it says "insert boot disk..." most of the time you just need to copy "NTLDR" back to the C: and it should work
-
That would have worked except that I couldn't access C:, even in knoppix. Digital Dolby must have actually corrupted my fs on C, rendering it unusable and inaccessible.when it says "insert boot disk..." most of the time you just need to copy "NTLDR" back to the C: and it should work

I got linux installed and lilo working... but this is the error I get when I try to run startx as root (sorry about the flash):
-
You were questioning the integrity of that drive. Have you checked the S.M.A.R.T stats on it ? Also, check out http://www.linuxquestions.org - it's the VideoHelp.Com of Linux.
Oh yeah, you'll like this http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ -
If ntldr was what you needed to get up and running, you should hunt up a 98 Boot Disk, copy ntldr to it, and boot from the floppy to an A:\ prompt, access the C:\ drive then the folder where it belongs, and copy it there.
I run 98 and 2K concurrently, when 2K gives me a ntkrnl error, I boot to 98 and copy/paste to 2K partition, Sys 32, I think.
I don't know from NTFS, though, so don't know if a DOS disk will let you see ntfs files to copy to.
Cheers,

Yep, I'm Garibaldi3489 at www.linuxquestions.org. Here is the topic that I posted there.: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=282650
Fortunately I got everything working. I wrote lilo to a floppy and that works.. so all I have to do to run slackware is stick it in. X was a pain but I was able to get it working by copying the xorg.conf file from my old topologilinux install (and modifying it for the old nvidia drivers) into /etc/X11/ in Slackware. After a few trys all it took was startx to get KDE going. Now I'll just have to do some swaret updating and update my video driver.
Thanks for all your help! -
You may also want to check into that huge white spot on your monitor. :P
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
