  1. Ok here's my problem,

I am converting your standard avi(xvid) to m2v/mp2, and I've used
tmpgenc the older version and gotten incredible results with not too
long encoding times. I recently tried xpress and while the gui is nice
and the calculator is a needed addon to precisely fill your DVD space.

The encoding is twice as slow and there is not a visible difference
between the two. On tmpgenc I use high motion search precision
and it takes about 50 mins to encode a 24 minute avi. I use standard
motion search prescision in xpress and it takes almost 2 HOURS?!

What am I missing and why is it so much slower?

  2. Good Question. I've noticed it seems slower too. But as you say the fit to DVD is a nice feature.

Due to speed concerns I've been using it mainly for PAL to NTSC conversions where it seems to do nicely. Better than Plus for that as near as I can tell. It may be tied into the AC3 functionality whereas TMPGenc Plus can't do AC3?

I've been mainly using it to encode episodic DVDs for England that can't be aquired over here in the US as NTSC. As an example I fed it 7 episode DVD rip chose save each episode as a separate file. Let it run overnight, next day I fired up DVD Author used a frame from one of the videos as a background for the menu, added the 7 titles ands authored. Quality looks quite good to me. I could have encoded the main menu and used that as a motion background but decided against it. For Episodics from DVD it is really nice due to being able to take in AC3 and Output AC3.

So to sum it up: Easy to use, good quality output uses DVD Author AC3 plugin and User discount to buy. Handles AC3 in and out.

    Cheers
    Minuses: slower
