Use the highest quality your computer can handle ( I have a ATI AIW and use the high quality in the Digtal VCR) and recode it using TMPG and the VCD template.

I use ATI's VCR program. It has settings you can use for the quality in the setup.

    Addemuendum (spelling right?)

Use the highest (which is avi format. I forget what size it uses).

  7. I have tried a lot of combos for VHS to VCD and now I do this...
Capture using VirtualDub via PicVideo's AVI Codec.
I use quality setting of 19 or 20...depending on how much disk space I can spare.
Then set bi-cubic noise reduction on.
    Capture at 352x480.

Then I re-encode using TMPGenc12f to MPEG1 352x240 (NTSC) with a CBR of 1800, sometimes using noise and/or color filters to correct darkness or quality problems. Motion search can be normal or high.
You should be able to get a high quality result using this method and for some reason Pic Video looks better than many other codecs for vhs source. Also, takes up much less space than many other codecs.

Real-time MPEG1 capturing via the AIW card will most likely result in less quality... so I would advise against it.

    Regards. -PUV
