  1. Hello
I have a few questions for Canopus ADVC users or users of DV bridge.
I will be converting a lot of old VHS tapes , bringing them in, and turning them into Mpeg2 format, and sending them out to DVD with Pioneer A03.
If you have a tape with glitches, black spots, lines, or fast action , what do these boards do with this info. Will your DV footage look exactly like your source footage? Will anything more be added, blocks, pixels, and what happens to audio, does it stay on track?
I don't expect my incoming footage to be better, I just don't want to add any more work then needed.
Also, what happens if someone gives you a video tape with 6 hours SLP footage on a 2 hour VHS tape? What will this look like?
Are there any other problems or fixes you have come across on the ADVC, or Bridge. These seem to be the 2 boards I am looking at.

Thank you all, your the best source of info

    Fishfly,

I use a Canopus ADVC-100 for transfering VHS to DVD. In picture quality I think it is a teeny bit better than what I was getting with my Matrox G400-TV capture card.

In my experience, with both the Matrox and the ADVC, I get the best results from tapes recorded in SP mode and occassionally in LP mode. The results when using a tape done in SLP mode aren't really impressive at all.

  3. Can you tell me if the Canopus ADVC-100 unit allows you to backup Macrovision protected VHS tapes? I know the ADS unit does it, but it's software instabilities are getting to me.

    Thanks,
    Robert

    Valnar,

Yes, it is possible to disable the macrovision detection function of the ADVC-100. I have tested this and it works fine.

  5. Is it disabled automatically or do you have to do something to allow it?

Sorry for asking twice, but this is my sole purpose for buying it. I have some old VHS movies that will never be available on DVD. I take it you've tried it with a couple titles? Have you burned it back out to DVD-R?

    Thanks,
    Robert

the macrovision protection can be turned off . when you turn the unit on hold the input select button down for about 15-25 seconds this will disable it. when it is off the status light will stay off during capture. if light comes on retry to disable again. Note you must do this every time it is turned on. So far my experiance has been very good. I read a post from karen that she returned it do to soft picture quality. I agree my vcds are not super crisp there is however no digital glitches or sound sync problems. For the most part quality has been good to really good not perfect.

  11. I would recommend that you install a 1394 card first and test it with a firewire device before you invest in the ADVC.

  13. Anyone here switch to the ADVC-100 from a DC10plus? If so, I'd like to hear a first-hand report about the quality difference. I'm currently using a DC10plus, and I'm reasonably happy with the quality of my XVCDs, but I really want to upgrade to Win2K and free up a PCI slot, so I'm considering a switch to the ADVC-100. The video out capabilities also sound handy.
