Canopus ADVC-55 vs. ADVC-110

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to decide between the ADVC-55 and the ADVC-110 for converting my analog VHS tapes. Other than the output and locked audio capability of the 110, is there any other reason to choose the 110 over the 55? I don't plan using the output feature, but if the locked audio will ensure that everything stays in sync I will probably go with the 110. Just wondering if anyone has any personal experience with that and whether or not the locked audio makes much of a difference. I know someone who is selling their ADVC-55 and an unused copy of EDIUS Neo for a decent price (from what I can tell), and second hand 110's seem to be only a little bit more expensive. Also, is EDIUS Neo a decent software package or is it rather limited compared to the pro version? I was planning on using Windows Movie Maker and then using some other software to author DVD's - is EDIUS Neo capable of doing all of that?

If I recall the 55 is really the same thing as the 110, but without the conversion of digital to analog. The locked audio feature they advertise is standard on all models. If you don't need the output I'd say go with the 55/Edius package. That gives you an entry level NLE.

I've been using an ADVC100 for about 4 years now and I couldn't happier.

I use to use my advc 100 but i dont anymore. I use a standard dvd recorder and use rewriteable media

I've been using the advc100 for over 4 years and I'm happy with it. One thing I like is that it can handle copy protection, which comes in handy.

I too am happy with the 100/110.

I've used the 55 but can't recall if it supports locked audio (good for long dubs) or if it has the handy 0.0/7.5 IRE switch (saves hours of levels filtering).

The 100/110 has the ability to show WYSIWYG from the output which IMO is invaluable. This depends on edit software that supports real time preview out IEEE-1394.

The other factor favoring the 100/110 is much higher resale value. If you buy one used, you can probably get your money back when you sell.
