Brand New to Ripping DVD's to computer

I have a few DVD's at home that I want to rip to my computer before I go back to college. I have a DVD burner and I know how to burn DVD's but I want to rip them to my computer and be able to play and wtach them on my computer.

I have DVD Decrypter And DVD Shrink and AutoGK and Nero Ultra edition.

These were the programs that I thought I would need, if possible could someone tell me how to rip a dvd to my computer so I could watch them from my comp

This will rip the DVD in it's entirety to your hard drive, without altering anything. A DVD5 may need up to 4.4GB, and a DVD9 may need up to 7.95GB.


... or if filesize is an issue, then you might need to look at converting to an MPEG-4 codec, such as DivX, Xvid ....

If so, check out the guides section, and select "DVD to AVI" in the conversion-type dropdown box.

As long as your computer can play DVDs, it looks like the easiest method would be to just use DVDshrink and make a backup copy. You could burn with either DVDDecrypter or Nero.

If you want to conserve space, look into DIVX or XVID. A little more complicated, but you should be able to get 3 movies onto a DVD to play with sufficient quality for a small computer screen. Check the 'Guides' to the left for instructions.

Well there quite big, 4.35 gb it huge, is there anyway to rip the DVD and then convert it inot AVI so its smaller?

If you've got a DVD burner, why not just make a backup copy, and play them off the discs ?

Well, to reduce information overload stress, I opted for the narrower field of DVD to XviD guides, compared to the more general DVD to AVI selection... (BTW, you've read DOOM9s MPEG4 codec shootout? XviD wins the quality vs encoding time by a huge margin!)

I did. I've just bought myself a DivX player, and my own tests mirrored Doom9's comparisons.

May I ask what brand/model? (Not that it's likely to be found over here - but maybe!?!) My "old" DVD player is beginning to crack up - refuses to play some store bought DVDs - no idea why, but plays my backups perfectly well, so it's not that much of a problem...
So I'm looking around for a new player, and I think I'll settle for a DivX/XviD capable

Nope, as I suspected, that's not available here in Sweden, it seems. Some notes on Z500, and some car audio stuff from Zensonic, but that's it...
I guess it'll be a Centrum (again).
