Hello,
Here is a list of pc speakers at bestbuy:

If you want surround sound you have a choice of 4.1 and higher. Though if you're looking at starting around $50 US you may be disappointed with the power output. Check the wattage on the speakers and the subwoofer.
The pc speakers can be quite excellent. You can get thx certified speakers for the computer but they are VERY expensive.
Also don't forgot about the cheaper 2.1 option if you don't really want surround sound.
Keep looking and you'll find a good deal out there. Just remember the more wattage the pricier they get

EDIT - I believe you have to have a 4.1 or 5.1 sound card to get the FULL surround sound. Some of the newer motherboards have 5.1 onboard sound. Though a friend of mine had one that did and wasn't too thrilled with it so he got a 5.1 sound card and used his motherboard sound for game chatting!Donatello - The Shredder?
