  1. I have spent the last hour looking for the answer to this and I cannot find it; so.....

I have a new Optorite 12X DVD +- RW recorder
(but this was true also of my Liteon SOHW-802S as well)

When I go to burn a DVD (usually after using DVD Decrypter and sometimes after using DVD Shrink ), the recording time is ALWAYS 35 minutes for a full disk (without a disk check at the end). It does not matter what speed I choose. If I choose the maximum speed for the disk media I am using, it takes 35 minutes (and sometimes there are errors....freeze frames); if I choose the lowest speed (2.4X) it takes 35 minutes (without any errors).

This is true of whatever media I use; the correct burn speeds are always displayed in Nero. However, the time is ALWAYS 35 minutes, NO MATTER WHAT BURN SPEED I CHOOSE. I've checked and DMA is enabled (as far as i can tell).

I don't know if my DVD writer should be set as a slave or as a master (although the two DVD players were set differently with the same result).

What is wrong? I read about people who burn DVD's in 7 minutes; but mine always takes 35 minutes. Oh, someone posted and said, do not update the firmware for this particular optiwrite. Besides, this was true of BOTH recorders.

Could there be incorrect settings in my registry? A techie, for my broken HP DVD writer, had me change something in my registry (an upper or lower bound was removed??).

    Thanks, if you can help.....

  3. No, this is true no matter what media I use; whether 4X, 8X or whatever (can you even still get 2X?--don't answer that; that is a rhetorical question). Nero ALWAYS lists the correct available speeds; but, no matter what speed I choose, 35minutes to burn the disk.

Check to see if your burner is in pio mode.

yeah what he said.. your prolly running in PIO mode.. you need to set it to DMA.. under control pannel then system then select ide ata/atapi then select the IDE channel your burner is on.. then select advanced.. youll see device 0 and device 1 then it will have a transfer mode area.. it will say the mode its in.. make sure its set to DMA there.. if its set to dma if avail but still xfering in PIO you need to do a few things to get it running in DMA.. first make sure you have a good quality cable.. for hi speed burners they need to be 80 pin. (make sure the blue end is in the mobo..) then set the burner to master.. ( HDD and burner should be on seprate IDE cables)

if you laready have a good cable then in control pannel delete the ide device under device manager and shout down pc.. unplug burner and reboot.. once booted and your ide devices are found and reloaded turn off pc again and re-plug in burner.. then reboot.. you should be good to go..

NOTE: you should have ASPI 4.60 drivers loaded.. i get them from dvd2svcd page since they still have the older ones.. but google them.. very important these are there..

  6. Thanks so much. The last two letters, plus looking around on the internet solved my problem; in fact, solved several problems.

No matter what speed I chose to use, burning the dvd always took 35 minutes; choosing the fast speed usually resulted in disk skipping.

This was only one of several problems; there were other problems, including:

DVD Decrypter took any hour to decryt the average disk (should be about 15 minutes)

My computer sometimes required a hard shutdown after recording some DVD disks

DVD Shrink often took 2+ minutes to evaluate a set of DVD files (should be a minute)

Seems like there were other problems, but those stand out.

Anyway, the problem was that DMA was not enabled, but it was not so simple as to find my primary and secondary IDE controllers and change the settings. I found them some time ago, and they were set to use DMA if available. I don't know exactly why, but it was never available.

What I did was go to the IDE controllers (for WinXP, right click my computer -> properties -> hardware -> device manager -> IDE controllers); and I right clicked them and removed them. I guess I had a lot of faith that Windows would reinstall the drivers (it did). I had to reboot twice and everything has been hunky dory since.

Thought I should post a more complete solution for those like myself with a more basic understanding of what the heck we are doing.

Anyway, thanks a lot to the last two guys for pointing me in the right direction.

I'm glad that you were able to fix the problem. Watch out though. Windows XP and 2000 have a "feature" that changes a drive to PIO mode if you have more than six errors on a drive. This can happen if you are trying to read a bad disc for example. Once this happens, the only way to get the drive back into DMA mode is to delete the IDE controller in the Device Manager and restart Windows as you did.

Im going to be getting a DVD Burner soon a pioneer 108 and replacing the current CDRW Drive.

From what Ive been told is if you use Nero it has the aspi drives right? What happens if you have nero installed but you dont use it for dvd burning and you use another program. Will the ASPI drivers still be active?

BTW i was checking around my computer and my IDE controller is set to DMA not PIO i was worried there for a second. I didnt know about this DMA or PIO.

    Thanks.

Is there a list on this site that use the nero aspi drivers? What is a good update i should get so all the programs i wish to choose can use the aspi drivers.

BTW I saw the link the nero ASPI drivers made and i came across this ftp://ftp6.nero.com/NeroASPIen.exe i saw the date it was listed as 6/22/2004.

If i wanted to install how would i unistall the previous drivers?
