I have an AVI file just captured from a MiniDV camera. It is about an hour long. Any suggestions to the best way to remove parts that are boring to eventually burn it to a compliant DVD???

I have many programs at my disposal.

tmpgenc, tmpgenc author, dvd movie factory.

If there is a good guide please point me to it. I could not locate one to the left.

    Thanks

    yadda,

I would edit it while it is an avi and then author it because that tends to mitigate the risk of issues like audio sync. However, it never hurts to give things a try. The software you have should be able to handle doing the editing after the avi has been converted to compliant dvd mpeg.

virtualdub is probably the easiest AVI editing software I have seen. There's a couple of guides for virtualdub here, or you could use my preferred method, and play with AVISynth scripts. The main benefit of this is there's no intermediate file to create after editing. You feed the raw footage into your encoder but use a script to tell it what to cut out as it goes along. FulciLives' excellent guide is a great read if you wish to go this route.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I will admit Jimmalenko Virtualdub is a little daunting but I need to dive into it and learn it. I will look at Fulcilives's guide.

    Thanks

Virtualdub and AVIsynth are excellent, powerful tools and will accomplish your goals, but I agree are daunting to learn. It's not clear if you are using TMPGEnc encoder 2.5 or the new TMPGEnc express 3.0. I use express 3.0 and as I recall, it has a built-in trim function. As you import your video file there should be a cut-edit button, see screen-shot:
    http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/thumbnail/xpress3_2.html
simply add your video file and cut the first block using "set as start frame" and "set as end frame" buttons
    http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/thumbnail/xpress3_3.html
, then add file again and cut next block until you have your final edit, then go on to encoding and author. I don't use the encoder version 2.5 so I'm not sure it has this capability ( I believe it is in the "tools" section but may be more cumbersome to use and may only work on mpeg files). If you decide to go avisynth route there is a gui called [rl=https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=AviScript]aviscript[/url] available for about $30, which can help you create some basic scripts. Hope this helps.

VirtualDubMod with it's built in AviSynth script editor is the dynamic duo. Tough team to beat, and best of all it's free. Must haves for anybody serious about video editing, IMHO.
